With pet food, it’s more than only taste that you need to consider. Choose the food according to your dog's lifestyle, breed, age, allergies & nutrient requirements. For instance:

For Puppy

Pups have very high energy lifestyles. They need fuel to sustain their level of physical activity. Its the time when their body grows very fast. Hence they need the right levels of different nutrients for optimal growth. Large breed pups may need vitamins and minerals to support bone growth and so on. Hence, a balanced Puppy Food is most recommended for puppies.

For Adult Dogs

Adult dogs will need to have their diets altered to suit their lifestyle. Working dogs like sniffer dogs or police dogs need more fuel to support their activities. Pet dogs who enjoy a more laidback routine may need fewer carbohydrates. Their diet depends on their level of activity, breed, and life stage. If the diet does not match your dog’s specific needs, it may result in a dog with poor health. your pet may gain weight or become underweight, otherwise developing health issues.

For Senior Dogs

Senior dogs need a little more care all round. They become slower, changes their lifestyle and show signs of age-related issues. Their diet needs to account for these changes. It is best to speak to a canine nutritionist to get the right diet for your pet.

Senior pets may enjoy dry food soaked for a few minutes in warm water. This makes it softer and easier to eat. It also makes it smell more tempting for your pet.

We have a wide variety of options available in our best dog food in India from Top Dog Food Brands. From Indian to International brands, at HUFT there is something special for every dog. You can choose from different pack sizes. Each food pack comes with its feeding guidelines so it’s recommended to check this before you feed your pet.

Breed Specific Diets For Dogs

Different dog breeds grow at different speeds and have different lifestyles. They have different nutritional requirements that go beyond an average size. In some cases, the jaw structure is also taken into account. For instance, pugs have a harder time picking up regular kibble. Large breeds like Golden Retriever and Great Dane need calcium-rich food for bones and joints growth. Adding too much calcium to their diet at a young age can cause joint issues.

These are some of the reasons why it is important to consider your pet’s breed when planning his or her diet.

Some breeds are prone to specific conditions like gluten allergies and this needs to be accounted for as well. Consult a vet or canine nutritionist as they take your pet’s breed and individual needs into account.

Remember, as your dog grows from a puppy to adult and so on, their diet needs changes. Each transition must be done well and with the help of a certified professional. This way your pet gets the required nutrients at that specific life stage over time.

Feeding Guidelines for Dogs

All Food bags come with recommended feeding guidelines for different breeds and ages. It mentions the nutritional values of the kibble as well as the age, weight and lifestyle of your pet. These charts may differ between brands and you should check it when you switch your pet’s food.

If you underfeed your dog, then your pet is not receiving the nutrients he or she needs to thrive. And overfeeding your pet can lead to obesity which brings with it, a host of other health issues. Obesity is more difficult for senior dogs and breeds that are prone to hip dysplasia and joint conditions.

It is recommended to do not guesstimate when it comes to the portion size of your pet’s daily meals. Use a kitchen weighing scale or a measuring cup while serving your pet.

Measure out treats as well

It is also as important to keep a tab on the number of treats you give your dog. As a thumb rule, the treats you give your pet shouldn’t be more than 10% of his or her daily calorie need. Giving your pet too many treats will not only reduce the value your dog attaches to the treat as a reward but it is also a way of overfeeding your pet. In the long run, this will take a toll on his or her health.

Dogs love to interact and bond with their humans. So if you want to shower your pet with love, rather than giving them treat after treat, spend time playing with them.

Common Questions on Doggy Diets with Answers

What is the best diet for my dog?

Honestly, this is unique to each dog and can differ even between two dogs in the same household. There are a few essential food groups like protein to include in your pet’s diet. But the proportions and ratios that you feed your dog will have to be set by taking into account a variety of factors as stated above.

If you are feeding your pet kibble, go for high-quality food made with human-grade ingredients. Some of the options may even have the approval of American Feed Control Officials. This should ensure better kibble quality that comes with ingredients like sweet potato.

Besides age, your dog may have specific food allergies. These allergies could develop over time even if your dog is not born with it. so it’s important to keep an eye out for these reactions.

If you have chosen to keep your dog on a home-cooked diet, then ensure to give a nutritionally balanced diet. Remember to take the advice of a canine nutritionist or a vet for this. For convenience, you could also supplement home-cooked doggy meals with good quality kibble.

How can I get my dog to slow down when eating?

Eating meals too fast is not breed-specific but it is common with pugs, labs and retrievers. Eating meals fast can result in pets throwing up minutes after. It leaves their tummies empty and increasing the risk for acidity. A more dangerous outcome is a condition called bloat which is also linked to gobbling down food.

To slow your pet down, you could try serving them in slow-feeders. These bowls have maze-like designs in the centre that food settles in. Your dog will have no choice but to pause between mouthfuls to fish out the food from these gaps. This slows them down while eating.

Stuffing their meal in a KONG toy is another way of slowing them down. This also provides mental stimulation by turning dinner into a brain teaser!

What is the difference between grain-free dog food and gluten-free dog food?

Gluten is a component that some grains contain and some dogs have an allergy to this gluten. Dogs who are gluten intolerant should not be fed foods that contain gluten. Kibble that is labelled ‘gluten-free’ will not have grains that contain gluten.

However, this doesn’t mean that they are completely devoid of grains. If you check the ingredient label, you may see that the kibble contains other grains. But any bag of kibble or treats that are marked ‘grain-free’ will not contain any grains at all.

Why is my dog disinterested in his food?

Sometimes dogs don’t eat if they are unwell, stressed, have dental issues or if their tummies are a bit upset. So check for these first and take them to the vet if required. If your dog health appears fine but still uninterested in his food then, maybe he or she would like a change. Some dogs tend to bore of eating the same food every day (just as any person would).

You could try mixing in a little bit of a different kibble, add in gravy or even some meat broth. Sprinkling our meat-based food topper on the food is also helpful. A senior dog’s sense of smell tends to be a bit weaker and this could be a factor as well. Soak the kibble in warm water so the aroma becomes stronger and more enticing for your senior dog.

How do I choose the right treats for my dog?

The sheer variety of treats available for dogs can be dizzying. Dogs like all treats including those with added preservatives and artificial flavours. But, since treats are an important part of your pet’s diet, you should choose the most nutritious treat for your pet.

As you would with kibble, look at the ingredient label. Those treats made with limited ingredients and that are high in meat content are ideal. Opt for those that are devoid of preservatives and artificial flavours.

Dog Treats that uses natural methods of preservation like dehydration are least processed. These are best for your pet. These will allow the natural flavours of the meat ingredient to shine through so your pet will be naturally drawn to them.

Every time I feed my dog a new type of food, his tummy gets upset. Is something wrong?

All tummies take a little time to adjust to new kinds of food. Changing your dog’s food in a flash may cause it to get upset. To change your pet’s food, mix 25% of the new food with the current food and see how your pet’s tummy reacts. If all is well, then gently increase the part of the new food in 25% increments. keeping a close watch on your pet’s reaction to it.

In most cases, this gradual change in food works well. If your pet does not take to the new food even when introduced slowly, it is best to stop the new food. Also, consult your vet immediately.

Why has the kibble I bought gone bad?

Many pet parents buy large bags of doggie food as it proves to be cheaper and convenient. But it is important to store this kibble safe. You should keep the pet food in air-tight containers. Keep it away from direct sunlight & dampness.

Remember to take daily portions out with dry hands or cups. Once you’ve taken the required amount out, reseal the container securely.

You can also store the kibble from a larger bag to smaller air-tight containers. Check on both from time to time so you can be sure that they are fresh.

What can I do to make meals better for my senior dog?

Senior dogs may be showing nutritional deficiencies. You should have them checked at the vet at least once a year to identify these. You can fix the Nutritional deficiencies of your dog via diet changes or supplements.

Senior dogs like warm, soft food so you could add some warm broth, gravy or water to make meals more enjoyable. Seniors may also have dental issues that make it difficult for them to chew hard kibble. Soaking it in warm water for a few minutes beforehand will soften then kibble and make the meal easier to eat.
